The book at a glance
In every chapter Marenco explains the physical principle by which a signal is transmitted to the brain as an electrical impulse – whether auditory, visual and tactile – or turned into similar information – whether olfactory and gustative; then he explains the fundamental physiology of the organs involved and physical phenomena related to each sense.
In the last chapter the author illustrates synesthesia, the condition in which perception of some stimuli recalls different sensations. Then he describes animal senses, as they are more developed than humans’, and the latest research on artificial senses, like retina and skin for robots.
